IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)

IANA is not really a fully-fledged organization. This is the name of the project, which is being implemented on the instruction of US Government by the University of South Carolina. IANA's powers and authorities are not based on the international law and are not supported by any international commitments. Just the other way around they are founded by Internet providers and are based on voluntary cooperation for the sake of mutual benefit.

The focal points of IANA's activities are concentrated in four main areas each of which has the minimal function of its own:

  • management of the root segment and the system of domain names;
  • arbitration on the address space issues;

RIPE NCC (RIPE Network Coordination Center)

RIPE NCC acts as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR). The algorithm or registration is as follows: ICANN allocates the blocks of address space for the Regional Internet Registries, and RIPE NCC - for Local Internet Registries (LIR), which in their turn, allocate addresses for the end users. Currently more than 2000 LIRs are being maintained. The latter serve as the source of financing for the services provided by RIPE NCC.
